Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary advisor for pre-BSN nursing students and other programs, as assigned. Advising activities include new student orientation, academic advising, career advising, recruitment, School of Nursing and Health Sciences admissions support, and compliance with campus and School policies and standards.
  • Maintains an active advising load of undergraduate students within the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
  • Supports undergraduate nursing and health science program recruiting.
  • Represents the School in recruiting events.
  • Creates, maintains, and distributes resources.
  • Collaborates with staff, campus community, and healthcare partners regarding recruitment initiatives.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director of Advising and Nursing Student Services, faculty committees, and/or Dean for policy changes and implementation regarding advising, admissions, and student issues.
  • Participates as an ad hoc member of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Academic Affairs and Policies Committees.
  • Maintains an active advising load of undergraduate program students.
  • Provides academic advising to students in the undergraduate programs who are unsure about educational goals.
  • Facilitates student success through appropriate suggestions regarding study habits and career information resources.
  • Makes appropriate campus referrals.
  • Provides assistance to students through discussion of interest areas, academic capabilities, and persistence.
  • Develops student academic plans.
  • Updates as appropriate.
  • Works with the Admissions Transfer Coordinator to ensure efficient transitions for transfer students.
  • Monitors and evaluate student academic success.
  • Reviews intercampus transfer/ readmission applicants to the School of Nursing and Health Sciences and advise appropriately.
  • Maintains records of student progress.
  • Provides information regarding the admissions applications.
  • Monitors and verifies SONHS admission requirements.
  • Keeps up-to-date on changes in general education and program requirements, and communicate these changes to School of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty and staff. Amend advising documents and web information, as needed.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director of Advising and Nursing Student Services, Dean, and/or faculty committees, as appropriate, regarding strengths and needs in academic advising.
  • Serves on the SONHS Academic Affairs and Policies committees as an ad hoc member.
  • Designs and disseminates new/updated advising resources for students, faculty, and professional staff.
  • Oversees School of Nursing and Health Sciences advising/registration as part of New Student Orientation (NSO).
  • Maintains the Pre-BSN handbook and Canvas site.
  • Participate in undergraduate nursing and health science program recruiting.
  • Participate in campus-wide committees and initiatives, as directed by the Dean and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Nursing Programs, as a liaison for the School.
  • Serves as a point of contact for the Office of Registrar and Student Records, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Office for Student Success, and others for the dissemination of information or issues that may arise.
  • Works with faculty, professional staff, students, and external partners to effectively market the School¿s undergraduate programs and co-curricular events.
  • Represents undergraduate nursing and health science programs at campus, college, and community recruiting events.
  • Creates, maintains, and distributes recruiting resources.
  • Collaborates with the Data Specialist to maintain up-to-date web presence.
  • Attends staff meetings, serves on committees, and represents the School and institution at local, state, and professional organizations.
  • Collaborates with the IU School of Nursing and Health Sciences and regional campus advisors.
  • Collaborates with the Coordinator of Advising and Nursing Student Services on student success programming and initiatives.
  • Performs other duties incidental to the work herein described and as assigned by the Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Meets with students in groups and 1-on-1 to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Master's degree in related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field. Previous experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.
Preferred
  • 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
