This role is located at the MGH - Institute of Health Professions located in the historic Charlestown Navy Yard

MGH Institute of Health Professions is currently seeking to hire an Academic Support Coach for the students enrolled in the School of Nursing.

The Academic Support Coach will work closely with students to provide guidance and assistance in areas such as time management, study skills, and test-taking strategies. Additionally, the coach will help students to develop effective writing and communication skills and provide support for students who are struggling academically. The goal of this position is to help students achieve academic success and reach their full potential as healthcare professionals.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong background in nursing education and experience in academic coaching or tutoring. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with a diverse student population. Additionally, the candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • Must be a Registered Nurse eligible for licensure in Massachusetts
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field is required

Primary Responsibility

Provide comprehensive academic support services to both students and alumni within the School of Nursing, fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence and professional growth.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Academic Support Coordinator will undertake various key responsibilities, with time allocations indicated as percentages. These responsibilities are integral to the position and contribute to the overarching goal of enhancing student success and institutional reputation.

Promotion of Academic Support Services (15%)
  • Engage in proactive communication strategies, utilizing publications, web alerts, open houses, information sessions, emails, and open office hours to promote academic support services effectively.
Culture of Student Wellness and Success (10%)
  • Play a pivotal role in cultivating a supportive culture that prioritizes student wellness and academic success.
Diversity and Inclusion Strategies (10%)
  • Design and implement strategies that enhance diversity and inclusion within the School of Nursing, ensuring an equitable learning environment for all students.
Instruction and Coaching (10%)
  • Provide instructional support, coaching, and reflective opportunities to students who face academic challenges, assisting them in improving performance.
Review and Consultation (10%)
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean and Program Directors to assess the need for academic support, evaluate delivery methods, and analyze the quality and outcomes of support services.
Online Orientation Guidance (10%)
  • Support students through the online orientation process, addressing pre-enrollment requirements, answering inquiries, and resolving concerns.
Academic Support Plans (10%)
  • Develop and implement academic support plans that offer personalized, high-touch support to students.
Early Intervention and Tracking (10%)
  • Provide early intervention for students demonstrating need based on readiness assessments. Track progress and analyze data concerning student success through to licensure or certification.
NCLEX Preparation (5%)
  • Assist students in preparing for the NCLEX examination by leveraging expertise in content and testing strategies.
Database Maintenance and Reporting (5%)
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of individual and group academic support requests, generating reports as requested.
Faculty Collaboration (5%)
  • Partner with faculty to support students of concern, proctor exams, assist with accommodations for students with disabilities, and address any arising concerns.
Training and Familiarity (5%)
  • Complete ATI training for NCLEX preparation and become thoroughly acquainted with all vendor-provided resources.
Presentations and Special Events (5%)
  • Represent the School of Nursing at open houses and orientation sessions and coordinate special events for at-risk student groups.

Shared Responsibilities

In collaboration with the School of Nursing Administrative staff, the Academic Support Coach will:

  • Maintain positive public relations and serve as an expert resource regarding program details for prospective and current students and faculty.
  • Support school-wide activities as required.
  • Perform additional related duties as necessary.

  • Ability to manage multiple demands and respond to complaints from assorted constituencies
Technical Skills
  • Computer proficient, MS Office experience helpful.
  • Familiar with standard office equipment; fax, copiers, multi-task telephone system.
