About the Department
Patients who come to UChicago Medicine with head and neck diseases can rest assured that our experts' internationally recognized expertise enables them to offer the most advanced and innovative approaches to the management of otolaryngology (ENT) disorders. Subspecialists are equipped to treat allergies, inner ear and hearing disorders, head and neck cancers, speech and voice disorders, and much more. Our diverse programs ensure every patient utilizes their senses as best as possible in order to lead healthy and productive lives.
Through the section's comprehensive research efforts, faculty members and researchers hope to find new and better ways of treating a broad range of diseases. One such research project that has received widespread national attention and support is Project Aspire and its sister project the Thirty Million Words Initiative-they aim to use family-centered curriculum and parent language to bridge the achievement gap between groups of children.
Job Summary
The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision-making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive and Comprehensive Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT)/Otolaryngology patients. The scope of practice includes consultation, staff education, family support, surgical and procedural assistance, and research. Clinic sites include, but are not limited to, Hyde Park, River East, and Tinley Park (Surgical First Assist).
Responsibilities
- Assists in facial plastic and reconstructive surgeries and in-office procedures, including, but not limited to, general plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery, including performing dermal filler and/or Botulinum neurotoxin injections.
- Conducts hospital consultations and partakes in advanced OHNS and facial reconstructive inpatient care.
- Optimizes care pathways for inpatient and outpatient FPRS patients.
- Performs postoperative care and follow-up.
- Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
- Works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to general ENT and FPRS patients.
- Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician under the supervision of a physician in outpatient settings.
- Performs outpatient general ENT and FPRS procedures.
- Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition. Instructs and counsels patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens.
- Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, and laboratory tests, interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
- Makes tentative diagnoses and decisions about the management and treatment of patients; Plans operative interventions for complex head and neck trauma patients in coordination with the OHNS resident team.
- Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes, and results of physical examination.
- Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, suturing, wound care, and infection management.
- Prescribes therapy or medication.
- Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
- Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum QualificationsEducation:Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Certifications:Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois
---Preferred QualificationsEducation:- An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).
Experience:- Two or more years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.
Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:
- Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:
- Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
- Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.
Preferred Competencies
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Knowledge of pharmacy, phlebotomy, injections, and general ENT/otology procedures.
- Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Ability to read documents or instruments.
- Ability to perform detailed work.
- Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions.
- Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive information.
