Job Summary: 

Under the direction and supervision of the Retail Assistant Director, the Retail Assistant Manager will provide daily operational management of their assigned retail dining unit(s). The Retail Assistant Manager is responsible for providing a high level of customer service, oversight of and adherence to quality control and food safety, inventory and financial management, team leadership, equipment maintenance, and developing and preserving professional relationships with external vendors, business partners, and colleagues. The Retail Assistant Manager will quickly address and resolve any operational challenges and implement solutions to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction. The position is essential during emergency situations, and the incumbent is subject to being requested to report to work.

Supervision:

This position reports to the Retail Assistant Director.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct, in-person supervision of retail unit operations while on call and on duty. 
  2. Develop and maintain an in-depth, working knowledge of all dining software solutions. 
  3. Arrange daily operations and services to ensure employees have appropriate equipment, inventory, and resources to perform their jobs and meet goals and deadlines. 
  4. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and Ithaca College policies and procedures (e.g., quality assurance, safety, operations, personnel).
  5. Staff Management: Be present in assigned units to supervise and coordinate the work of dining staff. Hold staff accountable to college, department, and food service policies and procedures. Handle staff issues and evaluate staff performance. Post positions, conduct interviews, onboard, and train new employees, and ensure all staff are familiar with service standards. Create staff schedules, authorize paid time away, and approve timecards. Maintain a professional dining image, including proper uniforms and appearance standards. 
  6. Team Leadership: Foster a positive and collaborative work environment through motivation and leadership, addressing performance concerns, providing constructive feedback and on-going support and training. 
  7. Quality Control & Customer Service: Monitor food quality, adherence to recipes, and presentation to ensure high customer satisfaction. Ensure dining areas are clean and well-maintained, implementing and enforcing hygiene and safety standards. Maintain an active presence in the assigned dining unit to help customers and handle inquiries and concerns immediately and effectively. 
  8. Inventory Management: Manage inventory levels of food, beverages, and supplies. Accurately place orders and maintain professional relationships with suppliers. Create accurate purchase orders and provide invoices to accounts payable in a timely manner. Determine and adjust par levels as needed by analyzing sales data. Maintain daily waste logs and minimize waste. Perform accurate monthly inventory tallies. Manage stock rotation. 
  9. Financial Management: Under the Retail Assistant Director's direction, monitor and manage the budget for the dining area. Adhere to department standards to minimize costs, including food, beverage, supply, utility, and labor costs. Ensure all financial (invoices, reporting) and personnel/payroll-related administrative duties are completed accurately, on time, and in accordance with college policies and procedures. Keep track of sales, expenses, and profits. Work with the Retail Assistant Director to implement strategies to increase revenue.
  10. Develop, demonstrate, and promote multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful College community. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion as a college priority, communicate to employees an expectation of civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with all staff, faculty, students, and visitors, and promote a flexible, collaborative, and inclusive work and living environment.

Qualifications: 

A high school diploma and two to three years of professional experience working in retail food service operations in a college/university setting, a restaurant, or other relevant establishment is required. The ability to adhere to food safety and service standards as set by Ithaca College Dining Services staff is required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service while working effectively and respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment are required. The Retail Assistant Manager will be required to obtain food safety certification and be required to complete the Ithaca College driver's clearance process.

Work Environment:

The work of the Retail Assistant Manager is carried out within an accessible, safe indoor and outdoor environment. This position will occasionally be required to carry or lift objects weighing 50 lbs. The Retail Assistant Manager will be issued and/or required to wear slip-resistant shoes. The Retail Assistant Manager will be required to work overtime, nights and weekends, and various holidays as needed.

This position is 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

Hiring Rate:

$27.04 per hour.
