The American Indian Studies Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for Assistant Professor (full time, tenure-track) in an open area. This search is part of a multi-year hiring commitment in American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The position will require significant contributions to undergraduate teaching (including teaching core courses in American Indian Studies), graduate mentoring, service to the program and university, and other forms of professional engagement. Candidates from all disciplinary backgrounds across the Humanities, Arts, Natural and Social Sciences, Education, and Health will be considered. We are particularly interested in applicants working in Fine and Applied Arts, Science and Technology Studies, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Geography. A joint appointment or teaching arrangement with another academic unit on campus is possible. Hemispheric approaches are welcome. Our program understands American Indian and Indigenous Studies to be simultaneously regional, hemispheric, and global while always anchored by the epistemologies of, and responsibilities to, those on whose lands we are located. The budgeted salary range for the position is $74,000-80,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.

Target start date is August 16, 2025. A Ph.D. or other equivalent terminal degree in a humanities, natural and social sciences, education, health sciences, art and design, or other field relevant to the study of American Indian and Indigenous Studies required before starting date of employment. Candidates whose Ph.D. may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor
