The Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a 9-month tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position to deepen and expand research and teaching in sport analytics. We aspire to recruit a faculty colleague engaged in innovative and impactful scholarship that will diversify and enhance our research, teaching, and public outreach missions, and who can translate this research to teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in research methods, statistics, data analytics, and/or other foundational areas (e.g. sport administration, sport economics, sport law, sport marketing, facility and event management).

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (exss.unc.edu) supports an undergraduate program of over 1,400 undergraduate majors with three specialization areas (Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, Sport Administration); a Master of Arts graduate program enrolling ~60 students also with three specializations (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration); and a doctoral program in Human Movement Science in partnership with the UNC-CH School of Medicine (hmsc.unc.edu). The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. The mission of EXSS is further enhanced through interdisciplinary cooperation and departmental faculty securing competitive extramural funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus serve the state and nation.

The teaching, research, and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 33 full-time faculty, 9 part-time (fixed term) faculty, 20 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 8 emeritus faculty, 25 full-time EXSS staff members, and 16 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.

Position Summary:

Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in sport analytics which may involve, but not be limited to, applications to sport marketing, ticket sales, and revenue generation. Potential applicants should have a strong interest in developing impactful collaborative opportunities within the Department, across the College of Arts and Sciences, and across the greater UNC community.

Responsibilities:
- Establish a focused line of research, publish articles in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals at a rate commensurate with an R1 institution.
- Seek intramural/extramural funding to support research.
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses (2/1 load) in Research Methods/Applied Statistics and Predictive Analytics, with the ability to teach a course in a core content area (e.g. Sport Administration, Sport Economics, Sport Law, Sport Marketing, Facility and Event Management).
- Mentor undergraduate students in independent study or independent research.
- Advise graduate students as chair or committee member for required theses (Note: the graduate program in sport administration has a focus on intercollegiate athletics).
- Engage in department, university, and/or professional service and governance functions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

- An earned doctorate or other terminal degree in sport administration/management, data analytics, or a closely related field. Candidates in the final stage of their doctoral studies who anticipate degree completion before July 1, 2025, are eligible to apply. All degree requirements must be completed before start date.
- Successful record of research publications in a clearly defined area of sport administration (e.g. sport analytics, sport economics/finance, sport marketing, sport facility and event management, sport communication, sport law, etc.)..
- Demonstrated record of, or strong potential for, securing external research funding.
- Experience teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses in Research Methods, Applied Statistics and Predictive Analytics and ability to teach other core courses: Sport Administration, Sport Economics, Sport Law, Sport Marketing, Facility and Event Management.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Experience in advising graduate and/or undergraduate students (through independent study, independent research, and/or thesis).
- Demonstrated record of, or commitment to, student professional development and learning success
- Experience working within the sport industry.
