The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to perform basic and applied research in tumor immunology with a focus on animal models. This will involve state-of-the-art techniques with research to be performed in a collaborative scientific environment. This will be a two year appointment.

Duties to include:

  • Perform studies of novel immunotherapeutic agents using animal models. This will include monitoring tumor growth and correlative studies of specimens obtained from mice.
  • Execute standard immunologic techniques including ELISA, ELIspot assays, immunophenotyping by flow cytometry, cytotoxicity assays, and RNA sequencing including both bulk and single cell analysis.
  • Participate in determining research priorities and planning programs of research.
  • Perform library research on specified topics.
  • Identify and evaluate new methods and trends through review of current literature, conferences, and seminars.
  • Translate and interpret data; write research progress reports, including summarizing test results of participating investigators; assist in the preparation of papers for publication.
  • Prepare and present scientific data at departmental, local, state and national research forums and meetings.
  • Judge the validity of data obtained for experimental procedures; determine and administer additional tests and/or modifications.
  • Assist in the training of students and junior investigators.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Order supplies/reagents as needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct supervision is received from Dr. George Weiner, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Carver College of Medicine and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics, College of Pharmacy. Additional supervision will be provided by Dr. Jill Kolesar, Professor and Dean, College of Pharmacy.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised over support staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. PhD in Immunology or other related field

2. At least 2 years of experience in a tumor immunotherapy research laboratory.

3. Significant experience evaluating cancer immunotherapy in animal models including humanized models.

4. Experience with procuring and evaluating tissue from animals involved in cancer immunotherapy experiments.

5. Demonstrated ability to plan and execute a research study through progressively responsible independent research work.

6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

7. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

8. Evidence of securing external grant funding.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations.
