The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology (Dr. Tomchik lab) is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist. This Assistant Research Scientist will carry out in vivo imaging and optogenetics experiments on Drosophila to examine how different sets of dopaminergic neurons contribute to learning and memory. The selected individual will carry out research on the mechanisms of mechanisms of learning and memory using advanced microscopy and behavioral approaches. This position provides an opportunity to join a dynamic, supportive lab, working to answer questions about fundamental neural function in a powerful model system.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Experimental Investigations: Initiate research design and methodology. Originate design, research conduct, and coordination. Maintain laboratory equipment as needed. Develop hypotheses to be tested and select methodology. Work independently on complex research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator.

Data Analysis and Evaluation: Perform advanced data analysis techniques. Develop new applications of existing data analysis techniques.

Dissemination of Research Results: May prepare and submit first author manuscripts for publication. Demonstrate strong publication record. May contribute to public data archives or other resources, e.g., software, models, or on-line tools to support scientific research.

Research Proposals/Grants: May serve as co-PI, contribute to research proposals and funding agency reports. May write research proposal to obtain independent funding as PI. Select and purchase equipment as needed.

Human Resources/Supervision: Mentor graduate students. May assist with functional and/ or administrative supervision for staff (if/as directed). Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved. Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Researchers in the College's over 280 laboratories are served by state-of-the-art core research facilities and research support facilities. Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes, and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Carry out in vivo imaging with genetically-encoded fluorescent reporters for Ca2+, ACh, and others.
  • Stimulate neurons with multiphoton optogenetics, including using holography (3D-SHOT) to selectively stimulate neuronal subsets.
  • Operate complex multiphoton imaging and optogenetics microscopes. Troubleshoot with assistance of manufacturer when necessary.
  • Perform behavioral experiments, such as olfactory classical conditioning, using Drosophila.
  • Carry out optogenetic experiments in a Drosophila behavioral context.
  • Maintain fly stocks, carry out genetic crosses to generate specific genetic lines/progeny, assist with fly room cleaning.
  • Carry out morphological experiments using immunohistochemistry and microscopy for various markers.
  • Perform experiments independently based on protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project. Set up and operate research materials/equipment. Read and understand protocols. Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare and carry out experiments to meet overall research goals. Perform procedures assuring fidelity to protocols. Track progress of research, identify any failure points, troubleshoot, consult with others when necessary/helpful, and ensure continued progress of research to meet goals.
  • Read and review research articles to develop knowledge of the research area. As knowledge/skills develop, analyze literature to develop hypotheses for discussion with other researchers and the principal investigator.
  • Adhere to safety and regulatory guidelines. Assist with ensuring that the working environment and records/documentation are compliant with applicable health and safety regulations. Collate documentation for protocol submissions (IBC, etc.) as requested.
  • Keep detailed records of experiments. Present research results verbally at lab meetings. Prepare written research results for publication. Present research results at research conferences, locally and nationally.
  • Order and maintain records of drugs/chemical agents and other supplies. Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment, monitoring lab inventory, arranging service contracts, and interfacing with technicians and vendors.
  • Assist graduate students and postdocs with experiments as requested by the principal investigator.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in a biomedical related field, other related science program.
  • Experience with in vivo imaging, electrophysiology, or related functional approaches.
  • Experience with microscopy.
  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible postdoctoral experience in a relevant research laboratory environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Basic histology techniques (e.g., immunohistochemistry)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office: Word and Powerpoint
  • Experience with Graphpad Prism
  • Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator
  • Ability to work independently while being accountable and efficient with time management.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, and western blots.
  • Experience with confocal microscopy.
