The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for a full time Assistant Scientist in Marine Biogeochemistry. The candidate will examine ocean biogeochemical cycling focused in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean using Biogeochemical-Argo float observations.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals, present research results at scientific conferences, and obtain competitive grant funding. They will also play a central role in the field-going operations to deploy/recover floats and collect validation datasets. The incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively and regularly with other team members, leadership, and the broader research community.

Requirements:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Oceanography or a related field and a demonstrated ability in publishing marine biogeochemistry results (carbon, oxygen, and/or nutrient cycling science) in the peer-reviewed literature. A research record that demonstrates results that align with the NOAA mission, particularly ocean chemistry and ecosystems, physical oceanography, and hurricane research, which is the mission of NOAA/AOML is highly desirable.

Previous experience working with Biogeochemical-Argo float data and proficiency working with large observational datasets is necessary. Experience conducting delayed mode quality control for Biogeochemical-Argo float data is highly desirable. Experience working with Biogeochemical-Argo float engineering data, including but not limited to conducting laboratory-based float engineering tests is required. Seagoing fieldwork experience is required, including the collection of CTD bottle samples.

The candidate must have previously demonstrated the ability to work independently and as part of a team and desire to interact cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds and academic levels. Demonstrated attention to detail, effective communication, ability to multitask, excellent organizational and teamwork skills are essential.


The position will be located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
