Job Summary:

Provides leadership for various financial functions of the university and leads efforts towards increased efficiencies through finance innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in the activities of various financial functions of the university, including accounting, payroll, financial reporting, disbursements, and procurement functions of the university.
  • Responsible for the preparation and stewardship of the budgets for all departments in these areas.
  • Provides oversight of the maintenance of the University's financial records in accordance with acceptable accounting principles, applicable University policies and local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Provides oversight of the preparation of various financial reports, including the Annual Financial Report, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Provides management with timely reviews of the university's financial status.
  • Oversees external, internal, and other third-party financial audits.
  • Provides leadership in the development and maintenance of appropriate internal control systems.
  • Collaborates with and develops relationships across departments to gain insights on the activities of the University and how to best provide services to Business Affairs' customers/constituents.
  • Identifies and prioritizes opportunities for improving financial operations through maximizing the functionality of available technology and investigating emerging technology.
  • Leads efforts in the implementation of improvement initiatives and monitors the success of these initiatives in delivering the intended outcomes and aligning with the University's strategic plans.
  • Leads and mentors a team of Directors and their respective staffs, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement; provides leadership and guidance to ensure timely deliverables.
  • Understands and operates effectively within the University's risk governance framework.
  • Upholds the values of Business Affairs and the University.
  • Participates in University and campus community relations by representing Business Affairs at meetings and serving on committees as needed.
  • Fosters positive relationships with academic and administrative units throughout the University community.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration or equivalent relevant field
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience or equivalent combination of 14 years of experience and education.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA and/or master's degree
  • Higher education finance experience
  • Current knowledge of NACUBO, federal, and state rules and legislation concerning higher education
  • Experience with PeopleSoft finance and human resource systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial operations, compliance, and financial systems management
  • Ability to work at all levels and constituencies, as well as have proven skills in in the resolution of complex issues
  • Solid leadership skills, including and ability to foster an efficient, innovative, and team-oriented work environment
  • Ability to guide and motivate others
  • Dedicated, innovative, resourceful, analytical and able to work under pressure
  • Demonstrated abilities in process improvement
  • Professional analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Professional attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent computer skills, customer oriented, and demonstrated ability to work with a population of various backgrounds.
