The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine invites applications for Chair of the Department of Periodontics. This full-time tenured or clinician-educator track faculty position is at the Associate or Full Professor level and involves the administrative responsibilities for the academic, research and clinical programs of the Department. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong commitment to research as part of our tripartite mission of research, teaching and patient care.
The Department of Periodontics is a leader in predoctoral and postgraduate periodontal education, spearheading a path of clinical excellence built on a strong foundation of evidence-based practice. The Department has educational and clinical facilities within the School of Dental Medicine and CODA-approved certificate programs in Periodontics and dual certificate programs in Prosthodontics and Orthodontics. The advanced education program in periodontics is designed to provide postdoctoral students with advanced training in the discipline of periodontics and implantology. Residents can also pursue a Master of Science in Oral Biology (MSOB) and a Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) concurrently with these advanced education certificate programs. Current research within the Department ranges from the areas of inflammation and diabetes as they relate to periodontal disease and the loss and repair of connective tissue and bone, to clinical studies on dental implants, bone regeneration, treatment of periodontitis and use of artificial intelligence.
The chair is responsible for executing the school's priorities based on our Mission and Vision statements. This role encompasses the overall administration and leadership of the academic department, including strategic planning and goal setting, financial management, faculty development, oversight of graduate and DMD educational programs, and supporting the service missions of both the school and the university.
The School of Dental Medicine is searching for an individual with outstanding leadership and academic accomplishments including:
· Internationally recognized contribution to clinical, translational and/or basic science research
· Clinical expertise in periodontics with a track record of consistent patient care
· NIH funding (and/or other extramural funding)
· Experience mentoring students, residents and faculty
· Administrative experience in leading a large program or department
· Nationally/ Internationally recognized as a leader within the field of Periodontics
· Individuals must have a DDS or DMD or equivalent degree
· Individuals with dual degrees are encouraged to apply
· Eligibility for dental licensure in Pennsylvania is required
· Must be board eligible or board certified in Periodontics
· Preference will be given to candidates who are currently engaged in clinical practice and clinical teaching as well as research
Preference will be given to candidates who can foster collaborative research, enhance educational programs, ensure delivery of exceptional clinical care and have Board Certification by the American Board of Periodontology.
