Position Overview

The Consultant, Board and Volunteer Experience provides vision, leadership, and strategy for all activities of The Ohio State University Alumni Association Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Council, and recommends and implements strategies to develop future generations of volunteer leaders.

They will collaborate with colleagues across the university to strengthen leadership volunteer's relationships with the university, to build community among the Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Council, and to leverage synergies among leadership volunteer groups. The Consultant cultivates relationships with all individuals to inspire their ongoing and increased volunteer and philanthropic leadership. The Consultant oversees and manages the operations and logistics related to the Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory council, activity.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Operations, Alumni Association, successful candidates must enjoy working in a highly collaborative environment and have a passion for working with volunteers have strong organizations, business, and communication skills have the ability to leverage internal and external networks; and be focused on customer service with the ability to effectively partner with a variety of audiences.

With a vision of being the heart of the alumni community inspiring and cultivating engaged citizens throughout their Buckeye journeys, our organizational purpose is to build a community of lifelong champions. We represent the alumni association of the future and believe in elevating the alumni and Buckeye community experience.

As an association, we are a shared service across Advancement as the experts in engagement and the constituent journey. We are one team aligning engagement and philanthropy, responsible for creating advocates on behalf of Ohio State. The organization is supported by 60+ employees, a Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Council.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides vision, leadership, and strategy for engaging the Alumni Association Board of Directors, Alumni Advisory Council, and developing the future generations of volunteer leaders; works with advancement leaders and volunteers to shape Board of Directors and Alumni Advisory Council membership and engagement; advises the Chief of Staff and President/CEO about engagement with the Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Council representatives; recommends and implements strategies to enhance volunteers experiences and increase recognition across the university about the value of partnerships with volunteers; proactively seeks recommendations for Board of Directors and Alumni Advisory Council; convenes colleagues who support leadership volunteer groups, including but not limited to college and unit campaign committees, to share information and create consistent experiences when appropriate; researches best practices and drives innovation in the volunteer experience; identifies and collaborates with others to build a pipeline of volunteer leaders.

Cultivates relationships with leadership volunteers; manages communications with the Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Council, and individual members; advises partners across the Office of Advancement about issues and opportunities related to individual members; facilitates orientation of new board and council members; staffs and facilitates Board and Advisory Council committees; identifies and assists Board of Directors and Alumni Advisory Council liaisons to other leadership volunteer groups; informs briefings to enable Advancement and University leaders effective engagement with leadership volunteers; collaborates with Advancement Events, Donor Experience and others across the Office of Advancement to provide outstand experience for leadership volunteers.

Oversees the operations of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Council; plans, organizes and oversees agendas and logistics related to all Board and council meetings as well as committee meetings; drafts communications, presentations, meeting materials, and talking points; coordinates with speakers and presenters; creates and maintains Board and Council records; manages budget.

Recruits, trains, evaluates, motivates, and coaches employees of various backgrounds and identities; establishes and monitors goals, provides performance feedback and coaching, and supports professional development; completes annual performance management procedures; manages performance issues; is responsible for using independent, consistent and fair judgement in exercising authority; develops procedures, assigns and prioritizes work, and ensures that the resources needed to accomplish work are provided; builds a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging amongst team members.

Participates in teams and projects to drive progress in the Advancement continuum and ensures volunteers perspectives are represented. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 'Four (4) years of relevant experience.

  • Executive administrative experience, including project management, logistics coordination, and strategic communication.

  • Master's degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Six (6) years of relevant experience.

  • Four (4) years of executive administrative experience, including project management, logistics coordination, and strategic communication.

  • Experience working with volunteers

  • Experience in working with a board of directors, preferably in a non-profit environment Knowledge of The Ohio State University

  • Experience creating standard operating procedures for an organization or program

  • Experience with relational databases, project management and/or board management software
