Position: Engine Mechanic/Watch Engineer Relief Staff
Reports to: Chief Engineer
Days/Hrs: Monday to Friday (40 hours/week), Relief Staff - Cover shifts as needed.
Schedule: Monday to Friday (7:00am - 3:30 pm), Relief Staff - Cover shifts as needed.
Days Off: Saturday & Sunday
Hourly Rate: $46.18 per hour
Summary
The Engine Mechanic/Watch Engineer Relief Staff person is primarily responsible for providing coverage to open shifts, planned vacations and possible medical leaves. The Engine Mechanic/Watch Engineer Relief Staff is responsible for the maintenance of all equipment in the central utility plant ensuring the clean, safe, and reliable operation of the equipment, including the boiler plant, chiller plant and the peaker plant. The Engine Mechanic/Watch Engineer Relief Staff will perform maintenance on campus emergency generators on campus. This position must ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations concerning the operation, Maintenance, and record keeping.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential duties include but are not limited to the following as other duties may be assigned:
- Cover all planned vacations for the four watch engineers.
- Be responsible for all general repairs of the chill water plant equipment, primarily electrical centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and associated equipment.
- Will be responsible for all general repairs of all boiler room equipment, such as: high pressure steam boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, air compressors, water treatment systems, fans, motors and associated equipment.
- Responsible for all general repairs & operation of a gas fired peaker plant, such as starting, stopping and synchronizing. A general knowledge of the production of AC electricity, such as: voltage, amperage, excitation, and power factor.
- Involved with the preparations to prepare power plant equipment for annual inspections and put back into service.
- Will oversee and assist in any work that is being performed by outside contractors on campus.
- Since the power plant is a 24x7x365 operation, all personnel within the power plant may be required to work unusual hours, weekends and holidays to cover the various watches and perform maintenance a directed by the chief engineer or designee.
Requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- The Engine Mechanic/Watch Engineer Relief Staff must have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and (5) years of experience with campus related maintenance.
- Third Class Engineers License or higher issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Prior experience working in a Work Order Management system, in particular with a Preventative Maintenance module preferred.
- Previous knowledge of a Time Management System (Workday).
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and manuals is critical.
The Engine Mechanic/Watch Engineer Relief Staff must have the ability to:
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Speak English effectively to faculty, staff, students and visitors
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely and be able to relay instructions and directions to others.
This employee must have sound, independent judgment and skills with the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standard situations. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. This person must have the ability to read electrical prints and follow ladder diagrams.

He/she must be able to work in confined spaces, warm spaces, hot spaces, cold spaces, indoor spaces, outdoor spaces and noisy spaces. The employee must be able to work with chemicals, oils and greases used in the operation and maintenance of the campus wide facilities.
