SES Energy Services, LLC is growing! We are seeking an Environmental Scientist to support our ecological services team in Jacksonville, Florida. This position will lead regulatory reviews focused on Section 404 and Section 10 of the Clean Water Act.

The Environmental Scientist is accountable for executing projects within scope, budget, and schedule, self-performing technical work within their area of expertise and supported by our team of environmental scientists, engineers, cultural resources specialists, and other technical professionals when needed. The Environmental Scientist serves as a subject matter expert with internal and external stakeholders including the project team, SES Energy leadership, clients, regulators, and the general public. The Environmental Scientist maintains all project records including communication logs, emails, letters, public comments, reports, references, field data sheets, and tracking sheets.

The ideal candidate will have experience working through regulatory requirements overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife (USFWS), and state and local regulatory agencies in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and/or North Carolina. Experience performing wetland delineations and/or hydrology studies, and Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification or other relevant certifications, are desired. Experience with relevant regulations including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act is desired.

The ideal candidate will be accurate, specific, structured, supportive, and thrive in a role where they are given the objectives and empowered to work with clients and other stakeholders on how best to achieve them. This position reports to the Jacksonville, Florida office, although a hybrid or remote position based in the Southeast U.S. will be considered. This position requires working in a variety of weather/environmental conditions and may require working outside of standard working hours for travel or dusk/dawn/nocturnal surveys.

This position can be based out of the following locations: Jacksonville, FL; Mobile, AL or Savannah, GA

Responsibilities:

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Supports project team in establishing project plans, monitors performance according to plan, and provides technical review and oversight specific to discipline. Supports complex or nonroutine technical tasks and is accountable for specific technical issues or elements of a project;
  • Prepares sections of complex reports and reviews reports by others;
  • Provides technical presentations at project and public meetings;
  • Supports the project manager or program manager in preparing monthly reports, invoices, and schedules;
  • Identifies potential risks to the contract scope, schedule, or budget and communicates the risks and recommends mitigation to the project manager or program manager;
  • Interacts directly with the client, including providing client direction/ tasks aligned with the contract requirements;
  • May supervise technicians or scientists;
  • With the support of the program manager, maintains client relationships;
  • May support proposal preparation;
  • May supervise subcontractors;
  • Organizes and leads medium complexity and low-risk field efforts;
  • Uses basic scientific principles, theories, practices, and existing technologies to develop solutions for limited-scope technical problems;
  • Prepares technical work plans and reports;
  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and to local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance;
  • Plans, executes, analyzes, and reports on environmental measures in natural systems;
  • Applies knowledge of natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, hydrology, and mathematics) to explain observations;
  • Prepares basic data and scientific documents;
  • Directs staff in performing project-related tasks; and
  • Reviews analytical data for general indicators of quality for routine analyses based on well-defined guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Chemistry, Geography, Planning, Policy, Natural Resource Management, or related field;
  • Six years relevant experience;
  • Or, a MS/MA degree in a relevant field and at least three years of relevant experience,
  • Or, a PhD in a relevant field and at least one year of relevant experience.

This position requires the ability to maneuver around work sites, see, hear, and verbally communicate with co-workers and clients. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, crawling, walking, or standing for prolonged periods of time; frequent opportunity to move about and to work outside the office environment for extended periods involving exposure to the elements with weather that will include extreme heat, cold, wind, rain or other inclement weather, walking over rough and uneven surfaces, and routine lifting of 35 pounds or more. If required, individual must properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to; hard hats, safety-toed boots, eye protection, respiratory protection, and hearing protection. Job is performed in a combination of office work, work throughout occupied and unoccupied buildings, and outdoor site locations. The office setting includes exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse. Building assessments will be conducted throughout buildings including crawl spaces, attic spaces, and confined spaces. Outdoor settings include walking, driving, and carrying supplies throughout all seasons with exposure to heat and cold conditions, and potentially wildlife. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
