Position Description
Performs administrative and supervisory law enforcement work for the Department of Police Services. Responsible for direction, planning, organizing, staffing, training, and control of all members under his/her command.

Major/Essential Functions
- Manages police administration, patrol, or investigations and related law enforcement activities.
- Coordinates and supervises special activities or events on campus requiring additional support from division or contact with outside law enforcement agencies.
- Completes special projects by representing the department on committees and in meetings, coordinating activities with departments, staff and the public.
- Provides staff assistance to assigned Police Captain; prepares and presents staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary; prepares a variety of reports and makes presentations.
- Ensure sergeants and non-sworn supervisors maintain adequate staffing for their assigned work unit to include scheduling days off, assigning overtime, approving time off and training requests, making adjustments for illnesses and injuries.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned sergeants and civilian supervisors.
- Responds to emergencies by serving in an on-call capacity, developing operational and emergency plans, and reporting on major incidents and events; assumes role as Incident Commander or other role as needed for the situation.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings and committees; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement.
- Informs personnel of division changes in regulations and policies, implications of new or amended laws and new techniques of policework.
- Reviews a variety of police related reports.

Preferred Qualifications
- Must have no less than one year of service as a sergeant and be serving at that rank or higher at the time of the promotional process.
- Have a satisfactory record of performance with an overall rating of at least meets expectations on the employee's performance evaluations for the previous two years with no special evaluations or formal disciplinary actions.
