Overview

The Manager in Training is a program to develop leaders in the hospitality industry by providing immersive learning opportunities to develop the skills necessary to manage a team or department. Barnsley Resort, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is home to a luxurious spa, championship golf course, horseback riding, fishing, sporting clays course, hunting plantation and both fine and casual dining restaurants. The resort is a member of the Southern Living Hotel Collection and has been named one of "The World's Best Places To Stay" by Conde Nast Traveler as well as one of The Knot Magazine's "Best Wedding Venues" of 2013

Responsibilities

  • Develop a clear goal for the training program based on the business needs
  • Determine what skills are needed for managers in specific areas of hospitality and assess the current level of skills
  • Identify the gaps in knowledge and skill development and set the training objectives
  • Determine the learning style of the managers and choose the appropriate methods and materials
  • Cover the areas of working with other people, managing performance, coaching for success, and dealing with challengeManager/Team member shadowing Supervision of other Team Members
  • Each rotation should include
    • Manager/Team Member shadowing
    • Supervision of other Team Members
    • Scheduling and processing payroll for department
    • Ordering and any systems used
    • Guest/Client facing interaction
    • Complete knowledge of positions in the department and confidence of supervisory capabilities
The rotation will be flexible. The trainee can request to extend a rotation in specific department(s) up to four (4) weeks. Extended rotations must be reviewed by management to ensure the rotation meets the business needs of the property.

Second Rotation: Primary Interest Area

Duration: 6 Months

The Manager-in-Training will complete a rotation in their primary area of interest. Options include (but are not limited to): operations, food & beverage, or culinary.

Qualifications

  • Regular and predictable attendance. Must be able to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Become intimately familiar with the entire property, all its amenities and its history
  • To create a positive impact on the experiences of our guests and team members, as well as the reputation and financial standing of our resort. Adapts service delivery to meet needs of a diverse guest base
  • Comply with all OSHA, Health Department, and resort regulations. Have a knowledge of safety and security practices and emergency/accident procedures
  • Values and supports departmental and resort standards
  • Inclusive and equitable in dealings with all team members and works effectively and cooperatively with others. Treats others with dignity and respect
  • Shares information in an appropriate a timely manner
  • Maintains open, honest dialogue with team members; addresses issues and concerns directly and immediately or through the appropriate chain of command
  • Understands the importance of lateral service. Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to step out of comfort zone to support the team
  • Attend team member meetings as required
  • Become extremely well versed with the standard operating procedures for all areas of oversight, having a complete working knowledge of the duties performed by all subordinate positions, software systems and tools
