About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The MBA Career Coach leads the development and implementation of engaging, creative, and comprehensive career readiness and professional development programs for a population of 750+ students across SMU's Working Professional MBA portfolio.

The position serves as career consultant to teach executive career decision-making methods that aid students in securing highly competitive and salaried roles.

The position also manages the programing and event strategy that drives employment, which is critical to the ranking of SMU's Cox School of Business.

The role will provide expert guidance in identifying potential careers and formulating compelling narratives delivered in written and verbal form.

The position partners to cultivate and maintain relationships with Cox faculty and staff, employers, and student organizations to engage students in career activities and programming.

Essential Functions:

  • One-on-one Coaching: Individually coach students in opportunity identification, personal branding, search strategies, resume composition, behavioral / technical / case interviewing, and executive coaching. Provide tailored, actionable feedback, based on experience with the business-school recruiting environment. Track student performance and use data to drive customized intervention strategies.
  • Career Coaching/Programming: Design and execute cutting-edge career development workshops to develop performance in the career search. Develop programming for and support orientation and career-oriented academic programming with student services team. Develop career-related marketing collateral to enhance brand visibility of Cox Career Management Center.
  • External Relations: Engage employers during information sessions, career fairs, etc., gaining in-depth understanding of the companies' talent needs and identifying potential matches with student population. Liaise with other departments (e.g., Admissions, Student Services) during career-related events. Serve as expert consultant to student clubs (e.g., Finance), providing career-related guidance.
  • Event Strategy: Partner with CMC leadership and Operations team to plan and execute industry/function-specific events to connect employers/alumni with students. Ensure events are relevant to employers and students, adhere to organizational standards, and align with CMC strategic vision. Track participation of assigned student population, verifying engagement throughout the recruiting cycle.
  • Facilitating: Lead instruction of students enrolled in MBA courses (audiences of up to 150). Plan curriculum, prepare and deliver meaningful and current content, assess and evaluate student learning outcomes, and provide actionable feedback. Utilize relationships with employers / alumni to maintain relevancy with current market conditions for MBA recruiting.
  • Analysis & Reporting: Collect, analyze, and report key qualitative and quantitative data on assigned student population. Identify trends and formulate data into insights and recommendations, advising CMC leadership on long-term strategic adjustments and near-term intervention action items.
  • Position requires occasional evening and/or weekend work to coach MBA students enrolled in evening programs and for career-related events.
  • Position requires occasional travel to conferences, workshops and treks.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of seven years of professional work experience in a business related function (e.g. marketing, finance, real estate, consulting, HR/human capital, operations) is required.

OR

A Master's degree and a minimum of five years of professional work experience in a business related function (e.g. marketing, finance, real estate, consulting, HR/human capital, operations) is required.

An MBA is preferred. Experience in career coaching and/or university recruiting desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, coaching, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University. Must also be able to manage and build relationships with a wide range of experience levels, including seasoned professionals, and students with diverse cultural backgrounds. A strong customer service orientation and the ability to engage senior-level business executives is essential.

Candidate must demonstrate strong written communication skills. Must also have a strong focus on attention to detail and strong project management skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills. The ability to be self-directed, prioritize tasks, and deal with ambiguity are essential.

Candidate must have a strong acumen in business, management trajectories, and the MBA recruiting environment. The ability to effectively communicate business terminology in writing and coaching conversations is essential.

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). A working knowledge and/or experience with social media tools preferred.
