Description of Work:

The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for an open rank professor of agribusiness management. This 9-month (academic year) tenure-track appointment will develop and maintain nationally and internationally recognized research and teaching programs in areas such as agribusiness management, supply chain management, food and fiber manufacturing and distribution systems, value-added agriculture, and entrepreneurship. The successful applicant will obtain and leverage external research support for these activities and will publish in an appropriate high-impact journal. This position will be located in Lincoln, Nebraska, and will have an apportionment of 60% teaching and 40% research.

Teaching (60%)
Teaching responsibilities will emphasize core undergraduate courses in the Agribusiness Program with a focus on decision-making and the management of agribusiness firms, supply chain management, financial and investment analysis, production and cost management, human resource management, planning, the application of economic principles to agribusiness, and risk assessment and management. Course load will include approximately four courses per academic year with an opportunity to teach at the graduate level. Responsibilities also include graduate and undergraduate advising, involvement with student organizations, involvement in high-school educational and recruitment programs, and assuming a leadership role in the undergraduate program.

All faculty with a CASNR academic appointment are expected to contribute to the instructional mission of the college. Specific course assignments may be changed over time based on academic unit needs. Expectations for this position also include supporting unit recruitment efforts, the IANR science literacy initiative, and engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Research (40%)

The incumbent will develop a research program with a focus on agribusiness and the assessment of issues and topics relevant to Nebraska. Research topics might include, but are not limited to, entrepreneurship and agribusiness development; supply chain management; adding value to agricultural products (e.g. biproduct development); new business creation in the food and agricultural sector; business organization, finance, marketing, management, personnel, and value chain analysis; mergers, acquisitions, and new-firm spinoffs; public policies related to agribusinesses and entrepreneurship; bioeconomy; analysis of the Bioeconomy, GHG markets, or climate; and sustainability for agribusinesses. Partnerships on research projects with other IANR and UNL entities, faculty at other universities, and public and private organizations focused on agribusiness management are expected. This includes possible participation in the Center for Agricultural Profitability and Sustainability, the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program, the Food Processing Center, Rural Prosperity Nebraska, The Bureau of Business Research, Center for Plant Science Innovation, Nebraska Food for Health Center, Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS), National Drought Mitigation Center, and other academic units within IANR.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics, or a related field at the time of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate level classes commensurate with the appropriate rank of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research commensurate with the appropriate rank of hire.
  • Experience and/or interest in Agribusiness Management and related areas of research and teaching.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exhibited ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and provide program leadership.
  • Demonstrated excellence in graduate and undergraduate student mentoring.
  • Demonstrated experience with or participation in curriculum development at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Experience with grants and/or external funding.
  • Agribusiness industry experience.
