The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has an exciting Per Diem opportunity for a Recovery Technician to work in the Eye Bank.

The Recovery Technician, Eye Bank retrieves and processes ocular tissue for surgical and research use.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Reviews cases available for corneal removal and determines medical suitability of potential donors by reading and screening medical charts, and speaking to investigators, medical examiners, and law enforcement officers.
  • Retrieves tissue from legally consented donors using appropriate procedures.
  • Obtains donor's medical information and completes all documentation required for donor's record.
  • Performs specular microscopy on surgical quality corneas to obtain an endothelial cell count.
  • Preserves sclera tissue in cornea lab and processes and packages blood for serology testing.
  • Ensures that all necessary tissue has been graded and assists with slit lamp examination.
  • Trains residents, funeral directors, and new technicians on eye bank techniques.
  • Prepares instrument kits for sterilization, maintains storage supply, and assists in distributing tissue for research or practice.
  • Harvests whole eyes for pathology and maintains documentation of regular laboratory cleaning schedules.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Department Specific Functions
  • (40%) Retrieve tissue from legally consented donors using appropriate procedures as defined by the FLEB policy and procedure manual.
  • (15%) Review cases available for corneal removal at local ME office. Read and screen medical charts, speak to investigators, medical examiners, and law enforcement to carefully determine medical suitability of potential donors.
  • (10%) Obtain accurate donor medical information and complete all documentation required for donor records. Follow-up on medical records from weekend and evening recoveries.)
  • (10%) Distribute tissue as needed to surgeons and researchers.
  • (10%) Perform specular microscopy on surgical quality corneas to obtain endothelial cell count.
  • (10%) Process corneas for DSAEK, DMEK and long term preservation in cornea lab as needed.
  • (3%) Process and package blood for serology testing. Receive results and file in donor record.
  • (2%) Prepare instrument kits for sterilization and deliver and retrieve in a timely manner from 6th floor central supply.
  • (1%) Perform and maintain documentation of regular laboratory cleaning schedules.
