Normal Work Schedule: Various work schedules to include holidays and weekends

Note to Applicants: This is a department only search. You must be a current UA employee working in the Police Operations Department to be considered.

Job Summary: The Police Field Training Officer facilitates field learning to ensure that officer recruits acquire the knowledge and skills to become a successful UAPD Police Officer. Serves in an ongoing role as a mentor, role model, and educational resource for recruits and fellow employees. Provides support to the unit leader. Performs standard Police Officer duties while not conducting field trainings.

Additional Department Summary: Drives UA vehicle. Must be able to work extended hours and overtime to include evening, nights, weekends and holiday hours as needed. Must be able to work various overtime events, both voluntary and mandatory, based on the needs of the department and the university community. Must meet regular attendance and punctuality requirements. Must accomplish the essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner. Must be able to perform foot patrol and work outside in all weather conditions. Must adhere to established guidelines for the use of a UAPD assigned take-home vehicle.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience as a sworn police officer. Must have a valid APOST certification. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have no written reprimands or suspensions within the previous 12 months. Appointment to the FTO role will be reassessed on a 2-year cycle.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated working knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and directives. Motivated to teach and to facilitate learning. Demonstrated ability to consistently model exemplary law enforcement duties. Ability to vary teaching/training methods to an individual recruit. Ability to give critical feedback and clear direction to a recruit. Ability to learn and utilize computer software designed for law enforcement. Demonstrated initiative to maintain/improve police officer skills, knowledge and abilities. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to use good judgement and make effective decisions. Ability to demonstrate courage and take responsibility. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous teaching or training experience; One (1) year of experience as a UAPD police officer. Bachelor's degree.
