The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Post-Doctoral researcher to work in Miami, Florida.

The goal of this position is to investigate the impact of ocean observations on hurricane predictions in the Gulf of Mexico. The appointee will join the ocean modeling team at the Physical Oceanography Division of the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). The incumbent is expected to: (1) Contribute to improvements in the data assimilation system configuration; (2) Perform ocean and coupled Observing System Experiments (OSEs) to assess the impact of ocean observations in the Gulf of Mexico on the ocean and on hurricane forecasts. The position is supported by a large National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) initiative aimed at investigating the Gulf of Mexico dynamics through observations and modeling. The appointee will work closely with partners at the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA/AOML and at the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the U.S. National Weather Service, as well as partners from the NASEM initiative.

Department Specific Functions

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to improvements in the implementation of the ocean data assimilation system (Marine JEDI) interfaced with a regional configuration of the Modular Ocean Model version6 (MOM6).
  • Use this system to perform ocean OSEs and analyze the impact of ocean observations in the Gulf of Mexico on ocean state estimates relevant to hurricane forecasts.
  • Run hurricane forecasts with the coupled Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS), using ocean initial conditions from the ocean OSEs, and analyze the impact of ocean observations on hurricane predictions.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners of NOAA/AOML.
  • Present findings in scientific meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, applied math, statistics or related discipline, and a background in oceanographic research at the post-doctoral level.
  • Required skills include a demonstrated experience with running numerical ocean or atmospheric models and/or data assimilation.
  • Necessary skills include knowledge of post-processing software (e.g., Matlab, R, IDL) and/or statistical/mathematical programming languages (e.g., R, Matlab).
  • Desirable skills include working knowledge of Linux, FORTRAN, Python and C++, experience with machine learning, and experience with parallel computing and high-performance computing environments.
  • The incumbent must have a proven publication record, scientific writing skills, and communication skills.
  • The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively within a diverse and dynamic team.
