Your Role:
Are you ready to drive the modeling, governance, and management of our R&D data as the R&D Data Steward? We are investing heavily in a solid data foundation, expecting AI and ML to transform the way we do R&D. We want to share as much data internally as possible, building the foundation for AI and the transformation of our R&D processes in a secure and compliant way.
As the R&D Data Steward, you will be responsible for structuring and modeling our R&D data across all business units. You will break data silos while ensuring compliance and security to maximize the amount of data available internally. By setting up the data model for all data captured in the future and unlocking the value hidden in our legacy data, you will directly impact the end-to-end digitization of R&D workflows.
This role will require collaboration with all business units to understand and organize data from their tools and experiments. You will be actively involved with scientists from diverse fields at early R&D stages to understand their experimentation, data capture, and processes upstream of the data model. With a deep understanding of our data sources, you will become the catalyst for our AI (Artificial Intelligence) material discovery projects to enable the faster creation of new materials within our businesses.
Key Responsibilities:
- Data Modeling: Model data coming from diverse sources, different business units, in situ and in silico experiments and in structured and unstructured formats into a holistic data model
- Workflow Development: Collaborate with the digital workflow team to design data flows and business processes from instruments to databases, Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs), and downstream applications.
- Data Access Management: Determine data access rights for different business units within the organization and ensure sensitive data is appropriately segregated to increase data sharing as much as possible.
- Platform Implementation: Assist in implementing structured data flows within the business and CTO teams using existing platforms. Identify gaps in our current data platform and propose appropriate solutions
- Policy Development & Classification: Develop a data-sharing concept across different business units to effectively exchange data of varying data classifications between teams. Apply the policy adding appropriate tags to data to manage employee access in downstream applications
The preferred locations for this role are Carlsbad, CA or Tempe, AZ. Other US EMD Electronics sites may be considered, as well as, fully remote.
This role requires up to 25% travel, both domestic and international.

- Experience in data handling and management
- Experience building data models on a company level
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience (or 1+ year with a Master's degree) in relevant areas
- Experience in the semiconductor business domain and/or R&D
- Experience manipulating data using scripting languages and/or data processing software (e.g., Python, R, Palantir Foundry, Snowflake, AWS applications)
- Applied experience with agile development, continuous deployment, DevOps, and decision science
- Good understanding of data governance practices incl., in how to automate to drive adoption and scale
