Summary of Duties:

The Gang Lab in Washington State University's Institute for Biological Chemistry seeks a Research Associate to serve as Project Manager for a new multi-year project funded by the DOE BETO RACIPAC program that is investigating the impact on carbon durability in the soil of introduction of hemp and biochar into crop rotation systems. The Project Manager will have two areas of primary responsibility. The first area will be coordinating collaborative efforts between participating laboratories and industry partners, as well as working with Dr. Gang (Principal Investigator for the project) to coordinate on-farm experiment efforts with project grower partners within WA State. This individual will work directly with greenhouse managers in Pullman to perform growth chamber-based experiments and then work directly with farmers to implement what was learned from those investigations to the on-farm long term research investigation. The Project Manager will also coordinate data collection and analysis for the field trials that will be performed in central and eastern Washington State. The second area of responsibility will be to perform analyses related to crop quality resulting from the on-farm trials. This individual will coordinate efforts of undergraduate student researchers who will perform sample prep and analysis for the various experiments related to the impact of biochar on crop productivity and quality throughout the crop rotation system. This individual will also be responsible for overseeing research supplies and expenditure, report and publication formatting, web page design and implementation. This person will also coordinate weekly subproject and monthly whole project meetings and help coordinate/organize (with Dr. Gang) the annual project meetings and yearly progress reports of the project.

The position is initially available for 18 months (each budget period of the project is 18 months), with additional appointment periods dependent on satisfactory performance and availability of continued funding. The project duration is anticipated to be six years, with 4 budget periods planned. Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a biological science, chemistry or related field.

  • At least four years of post-doctoral research experience in a field related to the project.

  • Ability to drive university motor pool vehicles for intra-state travel to grower partner and other research lab sites is a necessity.

  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skillsets that will be utilized and developed include analytical chemistry and metabolomics, data analytics with R and Genstat, plant physiology, field crop on-farm trial set up and execution.

  • The competitive candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills with an ability to work in teams and mentor junior scientists.

  • Experience in managing a research project is highly desired.

  • Experience in running field crop trials is highly desired.

Annual Salary:

$60,000.00 - $68,000.00 | Commensurate upon qualifications and experience.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
