Job Description:
JOB DUTIES: Do you love being outside? Teaching scientific concepts? Sharing nature with others? The Parks Division is seeking a lead naturalist to join our team at Schramm Education Center/Schramm Park State Recreation Area. The lead naturalist will help Outdoor Education Specialists direct work assignments and provide instruction and training to the naturalist team. Individual will assist the Outdoor Education Specialists with planning, coordination, and delivery of education programs for park visitors and field trip groups. Education programs are offered to a range of audiences and may include outdoor skills (fishing, sling shots, etc.), natural history (bird watching, insects, mammals, reptiles, geology, and paleontology), guided hikes, night programs, special events and more. Individual will also assist with housekeeping and maintenance of Education Center facilities and daily animal care. Individual will perform customer service activities, such as answering phones, taking payments, and answering questions. Perform related work as required. Naturalists may lead programs and events at nearby parks (including Platte River State Park, Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, Louisville State Recreation Area, and Two Rivers State Recreation Area) as needed. Work schedule will be Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday depending on candidate preference.

Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Three months previous experience working in a recreational area, scenic attraction or historical setting, retail or customer service setting, or related coursework, training or experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer coursework, training or experience in education, natural sciences and outdoor recreation/skills. Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

Full Time (35-40 hours), 11 months.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

We are seeking a candidate with:

Knowledge of: Nebraska plant and animal species, natural resources, and outdoor recreation activities; basic science and ecological principles; animal care; safe work procedures; group management; education principles and practices.

Skills in: educating people of all levels and interests; communicating clearly with people from a variety of backgrounds; entry level outdoor recreation practices.

Ability to: communicate and effectively educate the public; provide excellent customer service and apply proper phone etiquette; understand and follow instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; recognize safety hazards and take steps to correct the situation; bend, stoop, climb, reach frequently; work outdoors; remain standing and/or walking for long periods of time; ability to drive a vehicle for work purposes.
