About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
The Linux Systems Administrator is responsible for designing and maintaining the on premises and cloud hosted Linux infrastructure. This position will coordinate with other areas of the university and act as a resident Linux expert. The Linux Systems Administrator will build solutions that meet the performance needs of the service, the financial and security needs of the organization, and the business need of the stake holder. This position is responsible for researching new technologies and meeting with vendors to better design Linux based solutions with the best stewardship of SMU resources.
Essential Functions:
- Provide enterprise linux server and application support as needed. Engineer solutions to existing complex computing operations issues. Interface with users to investigate and solve problems, streamline procedures, and communicate results.
- Principle for daily operation and management of all storage solutions at SMU. This position will be the primary to lead, design, manage, support, configure, and troubleshoot connectivity related to data storage.
- Support other linux and unix based infrastructure technologies as necessary.
- Create concise technical documentation for complex systems. Documentation will need to be constructed and maintained in a manner that will allow other system administrators to quickly understand the critical components of complex systems design and maintenance.
- Support of campus load balancing with service owners to ensure services are operating as expected while also proactively working to optimize and improve services.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Education and Experience: A Bachelor's degree is required. Preferably in study of field of Computer Science, Engineering, Data Analytics.
A minimum of six years of full time Linux system administration experience in a large computing environment is required. Preferably work experience in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Candidate must possess professional communication in order to work with team members and customers of diverse technical abilities. Must also demonstrate to be highly organized and detail oriented. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. Candidate must have the ability to plan, organize, prioritize tasks, and complete assigned projects with minimal supervision. Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of virtualization platforms and how they operate in conjunction with load balancing technologies and storage protocols such as NFS, CIFS, AND SMB.
The position may require work outside of normal business operations to accommodate university events
Preferred software skills:
- Scripting Python, Bash and Perl,
- Automation: Ansible, Puppet, Chef
- Knowledge of engineering design and automation tools preferred
- LDAP
