Position Summary

The Undergraduate Programs and Advising Office in the Department of Psychology is seeking applicants for an Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Undergraduate Diversity Programs (12 months, 100% time, and in the continuing system). In addition to diversity programming, the advisor is responsible for academic advising for a shared caseload of about 1900 students.

Diversity programming responsibilities (approximately 20% of effort) will include:

  • Researching and implementing ways to support minoritized students through curriculum development and programming.
  • Supporting students through student group creation and tutoring connections.
  • Working with the Office of International Students and Scholars to create a seamless advising process and increase international student involvement in the major.
  • Creating mentorship programs that connect students to faculty and peers.
  • Participation in diversity committees at the department, college, and university levels.

Advising responsibilities (approximately 80% of effort) will include:

  • Holistic and proactive advising to assist students from 1st year through graduation.
  • Attendance at university, college, and department level trainings, meetings, and functions.
  • Supporting student success initiatives and assisting struggling and probationary students.
  • Participating in new student orientation sessions throughout the year for first year and transfer students.
  • Assisting the PSY internship program through placement exploration, course development and management, student recruitment, resume and orientation workshops, and course teaching.
  • Coordinating and planning programs that enrich the student experience such as graduate school events, career exploration workshops, tutoring programs, time management, resume building, and many others.
  • Using information technology to support students including MSU's advising and student information systems, University/College/Department websites, Microsoft Office and Teams, Google Docs, and Zoom.
  • Conducting degree audits for graduating seniors, maintains accurate records and monitors student progress on a regular basis.
  • Participating with the PSY scholarship committee and other committee work as assigned.
  • Consultation with psychology administrators and advisors when issues arise to keep communication open.
  • Participating as a team player and desires to be in a fast-paced and high-energy environment where the goal is to support students in every way we can.

Required Degree

Masters -student affairs administration, psychology, counseling, or other related field

Minimum Requirements

  • Masters degree in student affairs administration, psychology, counseling, or other related field at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to work independently while functioning as a member of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • The ability to retain a high volume of programmatic, academic, college, and university related information while having that ability to critically think through complex situations.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to learn quickly) University, College, and Psychology academic policies and procedures.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and monitor deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to use new and existing technologies to manage data and communicate with students including working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
  • Ability to develop trust, rapport, and positive working relationships with diverse students, staff, and faculty.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a college academic setting preferred.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Academic advising and teaching experience preferred.
